31 NASCAR Cup and Top Xfinity Series Drivers Will Help Truex and Sherry Pollex Raise Awareness for Ovarian and Childhood Cancer Initiatives

Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series champion Martin Truex Jr. and his foundation, The Martin Truex Jr. Foundation (MTJF), are teaming up with drivers from both the Cup and Xfinity Series for the Drive for Teal and Gold Steering Wheel Campaign during this weekend’s races at the Charlotte Motor Speedway ROVAL.

This fundraising program, created by MTJF co-founder, and stage 3c ovarian cancer survivor, Sherry Pollex, began in 2016 with drivers graciously helping Martin and Sherry generate awareness and funding for childhood and ovarian cancers by competing with a specially-designed gold and teal Max Papis Innovations (MPI) steering wheel. This year’s design is inspired by Truex’s love for the outdoors and features camouflage.

“The goal of the foundation is to make the biggest impact we can on childhood and ovarian cancers,” said Truex, co-founder of Martin Truex Jr. Foundation and driver of the No. 19 Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing. “We want to hit these cancers from all angles. Only 4% of federal government cancer research funding goes to childhood cancer. That’s not good enough for our kids.

“The number of projects we are doing and the amount of money we are raising and putting into action is incredible. We could not have done all of this without the support of the NASCAR community, great sponsors and our fans. I appreciate all the drivers who have come on board and will drive with these steering wheels to make a difference. Sherry and I are so grateful for all of their support.”

There are two ways NASCAR fans and donors can contribute to this year’s Drive for Teal and Gold Campaign. The first is TEXT TO DONATE. Donors are encouraged to make an impact by texting the word STRONG to 704-445-3411 to make a one-time or recurring donation. Beginning Friday, September 27, the auction site will be live for donors to bid on the driver’s race-used and autographed MPI-MTJ Foundation custom wheel at: https://nascarfoundation.org/MTJF .

Funds raised from Drive for Teal and Gold campaign support the foundation’s childhood cancer and ovarian cancer initiatives.

“To see patients fighting cancer is such a traumatic thing,” said Pollex, who founded Sherry Strong, a division of the MTJF in 2015. “It’s physically and emotionally draining. We want to change the statistics, not just in Charlotte, N.C., but nationwide. I have literally dreamt of the day we open the Sherry Strong Integrative Medicine Oncology Clinic in 2020. Funding for it comes from projects like Drive for Teal and Gold. Thanks to all the drivers and fans, women will get the care they need to take control of their health. Integrative medicine is where we are seeing change and we’re seeing patients like me do so much better. Cancer patients are now learning to prevent cancer versus being reactive to it when it happens to them and their family.”

In May of 2018, MTJF made a $1.2 million gift to Novant Health. The foundation is in the process of building two projects; the Martin Truex Jr. Foundation Children’s Emergency Department at Novant Health Huntersville Medical Center and the Sherry Strong Integrative Medicine Oncology Clinic at Novant Health Presbyterian Main in Charlotte, NC.

Additionally, the MTJ Foundation recently made a $750,000 transformational gift to Atrium Health where the funds will be used to support integrative medicine programs at Levine Cancer Institute and childhood cancer programs at Levine Children’s Hospital.
