In June, we hosted our first-ever Speediatrics Fun Day Festival at Chicagoland Speedway, one of five such events throughout the 2018 NASCAR season.
NASCAR Drivers Austin Cindric and Joey Gase joined us as we hosted children from the community and those in town for the race for a NASCAR-themed field day, all geared towards inspiring them to lead a healthy lifestyle.
While a great time was had by all involved, the event served an even greater purpose – providing accessible asthma and dental care to children in the Greater Chicago area. Thanks to a $20,000 grant provided to Mobile Care Chicago through the Speediatrics Children’s Fund, more than 300 children from the surrounding community were able to be screened to identify any asthma, allergy and dental concerns to be addressed by Mobile Care Chicago practitioners.
This includes 250 children screened specifically for asthma, of which ten new asthma and allergy patients enrolled in a comprehensive treatment plan. Mobile Care Chicago provides a physician and a nurse practitioner who specialize in asthma care so that children will receive consistent care from the same healthcare provider.
One such patient is Michelle, a 10-year-old student who loves being active and playing basketball, but is also afflicted by asthma. Before enrollment in Mobile Care Chicago’s program services, Michelle had been admitted to the ER 56 times, keeping her out of school and even placing her on her school’s absenteeism list for those students missing a month or more of class.
Since enrollment in the program, Michelle has not been back to the ER – meaning more time spent in school and participating in the activities she loves.
Stories like these show the importance and depth of impact the services provided by Mobile Care Chicago bring to the Chicago community. 97% of patients reported fewer than five school absences, versus 75% before enrollment in the program. And 94% of patients reported no asthma-related ER visit, compared to 45% before participation in the program.
The Speediatrics Fun Day Festivals are a coordinated effort through The NASCAR Foundation’s Speediatrics Children’s Fund, which aims to enhance the delivery of medical care and promote a healthy lifestyle to children in need, enabling them to lead happier, healthier lives.
